Martyn Crofts

He may have missed out on the final of Britain's Got Talent but Martyn Crofts make a big impression on millions of television viewers.

The mortgage underwriter stormed the Britain’s Got Talent live semi-finals with a rap in the style of a Dalek - while wearing a pan on his head.

After a public phone vote, Martyn missed out on a place in the final, but his novelty routine caused a lot of mirth.

After clips were show of him walking past a Skipton road sign and at work at Skipton Building Society, he appeared on stage with his trademark pan covered in sequins and his suit decorated with Dalek bumps. He joked that the sparkling pan was to mark the Queen's Diamond Dubilee.

Surreally accompanied by giant cheese-graters dressed up like Daleks, Martyn sang a new song that included the line “I am a Dalek from Skipton”.

Judge David Walliams said: “I think you’ve completely exterminated all the opposition in this competition now. It was incredible, it was moving. It brought a tear to my eye and I think people at home are going to be crying too. I think you’ve really got a great gift and thank you for sharing it with the world.”

David Walliams Fellow judges Alesha Dixon and Amanda Holden also donned saucepans. Alesha said: “I never thought I’d see a rapping Dalek. I’m kind of jealous you’ve got the bling version. Who blinged your pot? I do love you though – I think you’re starting a new trend.” Amanda said: “There are millions of Doctor Who fans across the world and they could vote for you now. They could make you trend worldwide. They could make you got through to the final. So I am saying to Doctor Who fans everywhere pick up the phone and vote."

To boos from the audience, Simon Cowell said: “Arguably the most stupid act I’ve ever seen on this show. It is insane beyond belief and I’m urging Doctor Who fans not to vote you through because at the end of the day we’ve got to write a cheque for half a million quid and put an act in front of the Royal family and they don’t want to see that.” But his fellow judges tried to shut him up by putting a pan on his head.

After the squabbling, co-host Declan Donnely asked Martyn: “The dream was not to win Britain’s Got Talent – the dream was to open Skipton Gala – have you had the phone call?”

Martyn replied: “Yes, I’ve had the phone call – it’s all sorted – Skipton Gala. 9th of June!”
